The injuries Jake Chalfin sustained on September 18, 2010, were life-altering. He suffered fractures of the C3,4,5,6,7,8 and T1,2,5,6,7,8,9 vertebrae, requiring seven hours of surgery to stabilize his spine. Although Jake’s spinal cord was not severed, it was severely damaged between C5-C7, causing paralysis from the chest down. He has use of his arms and hands, but with significant limitations.
Jake is one of the most strong-willed, goal-oriented people you will ever meet. His energy level has always been off the charts and his spirit is indomitable. Right now, he is coping with the new reality of his upside down world. Still, he has that hallmark twinkle in his eye and he is eagerly engaged in every aspect of his rehab.
Jake returned to his job as sales manager and marketing director at Laurel Valley Soils in March. While this will enable him to pay for his normal living expenses, he will need our help to pay for the extraordinary expenses that he is now facing which are not covered by his insurance.
A fundraising goal of $1 million has been set based on material published by Magee Rehabilitation Hospital which states that for the level of function that Jake has at the moment, long-term costs could exceed $1 million and the immediate costs not covered by insurance during the next 24 months could exceed $200,000. So far our immediate efforts fundraising have been very successful. We have raised enough funds to renovate Jake’s house so that it is completely accessible, pay for the 24 hour a day care that is currently required, purchase a power wheel chair assist with the purchase of an adapted van and other durable medical devices, rehabilitative therapy such as continuing physical therapy, acupuncture, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, electrical stimulation treatment, and medicinal supplements not covered by insurance. We can’t let our momentum slow. We must work harder than ever entering into this second year of fundraising. Immediate and near future financial needs will include continued daily care, continued rehab therapies, medicines and stem cell treatments. Jake is still in the process of selecting a qualified stem cell clinic. At this point he has determined that the clinic will be outside of the United States. The cost will be between $100,000 to $200,000 for a full complement of treatments, which includes several one month long treatments spaced over the next 1 – 3 years.
Funds donated to the “Jake Chalfin Beneficiary Trust” will be for the exclusive benefit of Jake and will be used for the purposes mentioned here. Because this Trust is designed for the benefit of an individual, the donations are not tax deductable. We know that Jake’s great work ethic and incredible determination will serve him well in what will undoubtedly be the greatest challenge of his life. He is determined to walk again and is willing to do whatever it takes.
With your help, we know he can do it!
